Projekt Hans Hedtoft

Redningsaktionen

English English version Kalaallisut

"When we received the Mayday Message from the Hans Hedtoft, I believe her position was 200-250 Miles away from us. I can in all Honesty tell you that the weather was simply "unbelievable", with Mountainous Seas of  very short duration  between the crest of the Ocean Swells, which hampered our progress to the Hans Hedtoft reported position to a crawl. If I remember correctly it took 3 days to reach the area of where she reportedly went down. The Flying Bridge of the Cutter Campbell was over 90 feet above the water and from our lookout positions we were looking up at the uncoming ocean waves. In my estimation the wind driven  waves were 60 to 70 feet high, and the seas were in a confused state. The worst part of the transit to the Hans Hedtoft was that the size of the waves limited  our overall speed. If we went to fast we litterly Flew off the top or crest of the wave, and slammed into the next wave in the series. We constantly pushed ahead adjusting our Speed as weather and sea state allowed. The ship suffered quite a lot of structual Damage , as well as loss of topside equipment and a lot of our crew were banged around  quite severly. At the time of transit  you were either on watch, or in your rack and no one was allowed topside for fear of being washed overboard.

When we reached the area were the Hans Hedtoft went down, we searched the area quite extensively using SAR Search Grids. The sea state calmed after our arrival making our search a lot easier than our transit to the search area. After the search was called off we went to Halifax, Canada and enroute went on additional searchs for Canadian Fishing Vessels that were also lost or Damaged during the storm."
